It forms the only
possible means of extending the dockyard. The above two companies also own a certain amount of other land in the vicinity on which they have erected houses for the accommodation of their staff and workmen. The rest of the property in the neighbourhood is of an inferior Chinese class. In January, 1916, the liquidators bad Messrs. Blackhead & Co's. property valued by one of the leading firms of valuers here, who estimated the value of the buildings at $105,500 and of the land at $143,700, making a total of $249,200. There is also a quantity of machinery which is said to be worth about £10,000. Messrs. Blackhead & Co. valued the whole property, including machinery, at £294,000.

The dwelling house at the Peak was purchased
by Mesars. Jebsen & Co. in 1904 for $44,000. The property is good but it is not probable that that amount will be realized, especially as exchange is now high. The liquidators received an offer of $30,000 last year.

Messrs. Reuter Brockelmann & Co's. godown is situated in a locality which contains many other small godowns, some being owned by Europeans and some by Chinese. The solvency of this firm is still doubtful, and it is therefore essential

to obtain the best price possible. The liquidators have received an offer of 840,000 for this property.

is situated in a locality which is mainly Chinese though it also contains a coal yard owned by a Japanese Company and a small gas
works.
